Weight Loss, Diet, & Food Addiction
Food addiction as an emotional eating disorder has become an increasingly important disease over the last several years. Previously discounted as simple over-eating and the need for a weight loss diet, more recent studies and experiences have shed more light on this. It has been learned that over-eating is actually a type of addictive behavior.
An Eating Disorder
This means that overcoming it is not a matter of improved self-discipline. Instead it involves understanding and treating a cycle of behaviors and hormonal responses that are best addressed differently. In such cases much benefit has been obtained from applying the knowledge and experience gained from treating other addictions more so than just diet plans and weight loss programs.
A Process Addiction
Food addiction, like other emotional eating disorders, does differ from others in that it is considered as a “process” addiction as opposed to a “substance” addiction. This means that recovery in the form of abstinence is not an option. Of course this is because one must eat to live. The challenge then becomes not stopping a behavior (in the case eating), but rather modifying and shaping eating habits. The goes beyond short-term weight loss goals and dieting. Rather, the goal here is to allow the food addict to develop a healthy relationship with food.
